With Skype and webcam interviews becoming more common, it's important to know how to come across well online, too.

Why employers use video interviews

‘It could be an employer in Glasgow who wants to interview people in Aberdeen, Inverness and Edinburgh,’ Alastair says.

‘They can do so without leaving the room, and without travel costs. They can run through many back-to-back interviews, cutting out the added time of greeting people, offering them a cup of tea and so on.’

How to handle it

• Speak naturally and clearly, directly to the monitor. Imagine that the person on the screen is across the table from you
• Dress smartly. Remember stripes or patterns can strobe or jar on the screen
• Take a look around the room. An unmade bed, inappropriate poster or dirty dishes won't give a good impression
• Noises you might not notice face-to-face can become a distraction through a microphone, so avoid shuffling papers or tapping on the desk
• Check that your internet connection and software are reliable. Do a practice run and, if you have doubts, ask about setting up an alternative venue
• Make sure any stray flatmates, parents, siblings or pets stay out of the room, and out of earshot
• Pay attention to body language. Just as you would in person, you want to appear confident so sit up straight
